2/25/08 Doc visits

Today was our Portland trip to see the specialists.
In a nutshell here are the updates:

Liver specialists: Logan continues to improve every visit. He is now at 10lbs so we can try and give him just breast milk for his feedings. That means I can try and just nurse him except for three feedings out of the day where I need to dilute one of his medications in a bottle. There are still a few very scary things that can happen while his liver continues to improve. One of them is more bleeding in the brain. The doctor is continueing to watch his blood levels which will show if this is occuring. The wrong labs were drawn on him last week so we had to redraw them today and we won't know those results till later in the week.

After this visit we travel across the street and see the kidney specialists:
He continues to show improvement in his kidneys also. We are now functioning at 45%. Today was the first time that the doctor talked about the longterm effect that the damage has had on the kidneys. Basically the doctor told us that by the end of his first year we will know the extent of the damage. It looks like at this point at some point in his life he will need a kidney transplant. The doctor will just use this next year to gage when that will be. If the kidney stayed just he way it is today he would need one around the age of 10 or 11. If the kidney continues to improve (which I must stress it has) then we are looking at the age of 30-40. If he starts even improving more rapidly we are looking at the age of 70-80. The bottom line is his kidneys are bad and more than likely at some point in his life they will need to be replaced.

That was his visits today in a nutshell.
I left both appointments feeling a little discouraged. It was just a reminder to me that I really just need to enjoy each day that I have with him and take everything one step at a time.
I know that God has such a wonderful plan for this little guy, but above and beyond Logan I know that God has so much that he wants me to do on this earth. I have learned so much through this little guy.

sending our love and prayers to you kristan. it's wonderful to hear the progress he's made, but i can see how these appointments would be discouraging as well. your focus is on the right thing.

You are doing so great with Logan. It is really awesome to see you McNallys hanging in there together and taking this one day at a time.

Logan is a special boy and he is so blessed to have you and Ryan for his parents. Don't ever forget that God knew exactly what was going to happen and he never gives us anything we can't handle.

I'll be here cheering you on the whole way.

Can't wait to see your family again!

We will be praying that those Kidney's just keep getting better!!! Then maybe it will be that 70-80 year old range, and he won't have to worry about it for a long long long time. God can do it!

Love you girl, I am so blessed that you are in my life. Don't think I can tell you enough.

Hang in there girl. Doctors can predict but there is a higher power that can heal beyond any doctor's predictions. I know you are praying as are so many people that love and care for you and your family. Have faith and don't stress about what may happen in 10-30 or 70 years.

Just as a note, my nephew was born premature and had very poor kidney function. He had many doctors visits while growing up. At some point he got tired and decided no more doctor's visits. (he was 16) No one could make him go, not his mom, not his dad. Everyone panicked and cried and suffered.

Long story short.

He is 28 years old, happily married and raising a healthy 3 year old boy.

It's good to prepare, it's great to pray. Do both and there is no going wrong. We love you.

Kristan! First off thank you for taking the time to update us. I totally appreciate being in the know of this entire situation. I miss you and I'm thinking of you and your family in my prayers. Everything will come together somday. Whether that be sooner or later only God knows. Your doing great. Surely this is a hard time for you and your family yet you stand firm in your faith. Keep your chin up! I'll be praying for his kidneys and liver to heal rapidly.
